SPECIAL COMPOST GRANT For 2021 Now Open!

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 21!

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the typical compost grant program offered by Citizens Committee for New York City (CCNYC) and the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board (MSWAB) has been delayed until Fall 2021.

However, MSWAB will fund three grant proposals for $1000 each to build a compost system that will be:

  1. Available to the public;

  2. Constructed by May 2021;

  3. Sustained for at least three years to help buffer the the temporary suspension of organics collections by NYC's Department of Sanitation and public organics dropoff sites due to the COVID-19 driven budget cuts.

Selections will be made by the members of the Organics Committee of the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board.


Eligibility Requirements

  • Grant application submitted by 5 pm EST on March 21, 2021

  • Applicant must be a community association/organization, community garden, friends of park group, housing development group, nonprofit, school, college/university, hospital

  • Applicant must complete & upload the file "Certificate of Authorization to apply for Compost Grant 2021" provide either an EIN number or a W-9 form with vendor identification OR identify a fiscal sponsor with specific bank details

  • Priority will be given to applicants in neighborhoods of Manhattan, Bronx, Queens & Brooklyn (in that order) with minimal access to composting sites/opportunities

Send completed proposal to mswab.grants.organics@gmail.com by 5 pm EST on March 21, 2021

Awards will be announced by the beginning of April 2021.

Grant Restrictions

Funds must be used only towards the construction or purchase of a large compost system that can accept food and yard waste from the community as well as the applicant organization. Funds cannot be used for planning or personnel expenses. Awardees must assume all liability for their projects and sign an agreement governing the project.


Selection Criteria

  • Completeness of proposal application and requirements

  • Verification the organization has the means to construct the compost system by May 2021

  • Verification the organization is open weekly for community food & yard waste drop-offs

  • Commitment & ability to sustain the project for at least three years

  • Commitment to providing metrics/data of project (estimates of organics diverted from trash)

  • Ability to implement/realize the project, i.e., site permissions, track record of group
