Debris and waste are unavoidable by-products of natural disasters. Sustainable management of waste in the aftermath of these events is complicated by the priority for life saving and safety efforts. Issues that inevitably arise include determining viable treatment or recycling/reuse options, collection and transportation, environmental and health hazards, and financial responsibility. Two experts in disaster materials management will discuss how proper planning at various levels can mitigate difficulties during the deployment and execution of material recovery and recycling efforts.
